Baseball Public Service Announcement: Manny Machado

We interrupt this regularly scheduled blog for a special Baseball Public Service Announcement to inform you of Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles, who hit two home runs in just his second MLB game. That, by the way, made the 20-year-old the youngest person to ever have a two-homer game in either his first or second game.

Go after the jump for more.

Who is Manny Machado?

Manny Machado is one of the top prospects in baseball, a right-handed SS/3B who was named the ninth best prospect in baseball at midseason by Baseball America. Born and raised in Miami, Machado has sometimes been compared to Alex Rodriguez as far as potential. While that is perhaps setting the bar a bit too high, most everyone expects that he will be a mainstay at Shortstop for the Orioles for years to come.

Wait, but he’s played 3B so far!

Yes, he has. It mainly has to do with the fact that short is currently filled by J.J. Hardy right now, while the usual third-basemen for Baltimore, such as Wilson Betemit, have underperformed.

So, how had he done in the minors?

Not as good as the hype would suggest. He’s only a career .263 hitter in the portions of three seasons he has had in Baltimore’s farm system, with a good-but-not-great .776 OPS. However, sometimes minor league stats can be deceiving. Bryce Harper, for example, struggled in AA and AAA but has, until the last two months, been very good in the majors (although his last two months have, it should be noted, been pretty brutal: he’s hitting .173 in August, for example).

This concludes a Baseball Public Service Announcement.
