Early WBC News for Feb. 27, 2013

World Baseball Classic from the morning and overnight can be found after the jump:

Something I forgot to mention last night, but Gregory Koach on Twitter also mentioned to me that he had found a WBC app.

Here are the Cave-dwellers for the Fan Cave WBC edition.

The pre-tournament warm-up games continue, as the continued offensive haplessness of Team Korea continued with a 1-0 loss to a Taiwanese Army All-Star Team and Taipei lost to the NC Dinos 5-2. By the way folks, don’t look too much into these losses, as they are basically spring training games for the National Teams.

Team China lost to the Orix Buffaloes 8-1. Team Cuba beat the Hanshin Tigers 3-2.

More WBC news later…

  1. I think that even though these games are practice games, there is a lot of information you an gather from them, particularly that loss of the Korean team to the Military team from Taiwan. Could you imagine the US, Venezuela or the DR losing a (practice) game 1-0 to an amateur team like that?

    • While I agree with you on that folks, it should be noted that the Taiwanese still have some forms of conscription, so it’s entirely possible that their military team has guys who would probably be playing professionally if they weren’t in the military.

Totally agree on what would happen if one of the big western teams lost, though. In fact, I read once that in 1992 the basketball “Dream Team” faced an NCAA All-Star team in a scrimmage. The Dream Team LOST (this was possibly rigged by Coach Daly to make sure they weren’t overconfident- he didn’t play all of his starters, for example). He made sure that as few people found out about it as possible, so that people wouldn’t panic.
