Wladimir Balentien ties Sadaharu Oh’s single-season record

Wladimir Balentien has tied Sadaharu Oh’s record for single-season HR in Japan with his 55th HR. Others have tied it in the past, but none have been able to break it, partly due to Japanese pitchers avoiding him in order to preserve Oh’s record from being broken by a Gaijin. That attitude may now be a thing of the past though, and even if it isn’t, Balentien still has 22 games left, and it seems doubtful that they’d be able to avoid him for all of it.

MVP of Yesterday (September 9, 2013): Juan Uribe

Juan Uribe had 3 HRs yesterday. Since Gio Gonzalez failed to throw a no-hitter, that gives him the MVP of Yesterday award.

Standings, well… you know the drill:

The Blue Jays will play exhibition games in Montreal next year.

MVP of Yesterday (September 8, 2013): Jay Bruce

Yesterday’s MVP, Jay Bruce, had two home runs yesterday in the Reds’ victory over the Dodgers. Even more amazingly, they were both off Clayton Kershaw. Amazingly, those were the first two HRs Kershaw gave up to a lefty all year.

It’s his second of the year.

After his 31-6 1968 season, Tigers pitcher Denny McLain was offered- and accepted- an offer to play the organ in an album for Capitol Records. This is a sampling of that work:

MVP of Yesterday (September 7, 2013): Brandon McCarthy

Brandon McCarthy went a good 8 innings while giving up only one run yesterday, and I’m naming him the MVP of Yesterday.

When you come within a strike of a perfect game, you are going to be the MVP. Such it is with Yusmeiro Petit.

MVP of Yesterday (September 5, 2013): Todd Frazier

Todd Frazier hit two HRs yesterday… what did YOU do yesterday? I bet you didn’t hit two HRs… which is why you aren’t the MVP of Yesterday, but Frazier is.

George Carlin: Baseball and Football

I’ve posted this before, but it’s still a classic, and in honor of the start of the NFL season, I’m posting it again: George Carlin on the differences between baseball and football.

MVP of Yesterday (September 4, 2013): Pablo Sandoval

Pablo Sandoval hit 4-5 with THREE homers and SIX RBIs. I’m so sure that he won the MVP of Yesterday that I wrote this late last night and set it to automatically post in the morning.

Standings are after the jump:
