Episode 5 of The Franchise is Wives’ Day

Episode 5 of The Franchise (Miami Marlins edition) is definitely different from the previous episodes. For one thing, by now everybody knows, in the aftermath of the trade deadline, that this team isn’t going to be the paradigm-shifting one that Jeff Loria had hoped it would be for Miami baseball. The opening title sequence, which once had people talking about how this was going to be the Marlins team that was going to go against the best of the best and change everything, now has more reflective quotes about how it hasn’t gone so well and they are trying to fix things. For another, this episode is focused heavily not on the players, but rather their wives. Go below the jump for more, as well as this week’s Ozzie Guillen counter.

  • As mentioned earlier, this episode features a lot of the players’ wives, as they watch a away game while eating in a Miami restaurant. They don’t really make it clear whether they are following the game on their phones, or actually  watching TV, however, although I guess that’s just one confusing bit.
  • They begin talking about Jose Reyes’ hitting streak in this episode. Alas, that streak has since ended, probably ruining some dream-plans that Showtime had of chronicling an assault on Joe DiMaggio.
  • The best part of this episode was when the bullpen guys were playing pranks on each other. Even though they are kind of cliche pranks (jumping out of a closet at somebody), they still made me chuckle.
  • Here is this week’s Ozzie Guillen “Carlin Word” Counter, all of which comes from a scene that opens the episode, in which he talks about how all of the Marlins have good bodies but all play like crap:

F-Bombs: Approx. 8

S-Words: Approx. 4

Other: 0

Total number of “Carlin Words” in Episode 5: 12

Total number so far: 105 (about one swear word by Ozzie Guillen every 103 seconds or so)
