Early WBC news for Feb. 16, 2013

It’s time again for World Baseball Classic news! Go below the jump for the latest:

Jose De La Torre, a reliever for the Red Sox, has confirmed he’s playing for his native Puerto Rico.

The Rangers have told Jurickson Profar it’s his call whether to play in the WBC for the Netherlands, and that playing wouldn’t significantly hurt his chances (which are small) of making the team out of spring training.

A decision on Johan Santana is expected on Monday, and it’s highly unlikely that the Mets- who are able to block Santana since he was hurt last year- will let him play.

Joel Peralta of the Dominican Republic is unlikely to play due to his embarrassing and odd injury.

Hank Schulman and the rest of us owe Marco Scutaro an apology, as he is going to play in the WBC:

Forbes has noted how the WBC is helping grow the game overseas.

Here’s some video from the exhibition game between Team China and the NC Dinos of the KBO:

The Orioles signed Jair Jurrjens, and as a result he isn’t going to be playing for the Netherlands in the WBC as he tries to resurrect his once-promising career.

Neat trivia:

The next few days will see more WBC news and more exhibition games by some teams, such as the Netherlands and China. Keep an eye out (and tell your friends about!) the Baseball Continuum for all the World Baseball Classic news you would ever want to know… and don’t forget about Joe Connor’s WBC Guides as well.
