WBC news for Feb. 17, 2013

Samurai Japan’s first warm-up game didn’t go very well, as they had only three hits in a loss to the Hiroshima Carp. Video from the game is below:

In other warm-up action, the Netherlands demolished China in a game in Arizona, 16-3. This game will likely factor into the Continuum Rankings, by the way.

The Mexican League will allow it’s players to play in the WBC, taking into account the needs and requests of Mexico. A dispute between the Mexican League and the Mexican Baseball Federation had been jeopardizing the participation the Mexican League players, such as Karim Garcia.

Gio Gonzalez, who was only recently added to Team USA, will probably not join the team until Round 2, should Team USA make it. This actually is something of a canny move, as it would allow Team USA to have an ace going in Game 1 of Round 2, where the double-elimination format makes the games even more important than the round robin first round.

Francisco Rodriguez, still a free agent, will be pitching for Venezuela.

As manager Jon Deeble tweeted, the Australian National Team has arrived in Taiwan. Their first warm-up game will the 19th against Cuba.
