LINK WEEK: Designated Hits

This is LINK WEEK, so until Saturday, every day will see me adding another link. Today’s link is DESIGNATED HITS. The page is based on a single question: What is a player’s walk-up (or, in the case of pitchers, entrance) song? Designated Hits lists that, team by team, while also allowing you to search to see who likes artists (say, Jay-Z) or even individual songs (“Radioactive” was quite popular last year, for example).

Parts of it could use some updating, but it’s still up-to-date enough to be included.

LINK WEEK: Big League Stew

This is LINK WEEK. Until Saturday, every day will bring a new link. And today’s link is to Yahoo! Sports’ Big League Stew blog. And, no, this has nothing to do with the fact they linked to me about the Stan Musial wallet.

Nothing at all.

I swear.

(I’m a horrible liar.)

In reality, the reason behind this is that, to be honest, I’m sort of surprised I didn’t have BLS already up. It is one of the premiere baseball blogs on the internet, giving a reader the usual news and analysis but also sometimes taking a walk on the wild side, such as when they linked to yours truly. So… check out Big League Stew.

LINK WEEK: Hardball Passport

This week is LINK WEEK, from today until next Saturday there will be a link every day to a neat website.

The first link is perhaps the best link: Hardball Passport. It’s a very simple idea: make a log of every professional baseball game you’ve been to. Every MLB game since the 1975 World Series (Carlton Fisk’s HR, to be more exact) and every MiLB game since 2002 is in there, and they are likely going to add more to the future. It’s a fun way of remembering your past travels. My page, for example, has every MLB game I’ve been to while conscious of my actions (I think I went to a Blue Jays game when I was a baby) and many MiLB games since 2000 (there is no way I’ll ever be able to remember every game I’ve been to). In addition, you can get statistics- what was the best MLB hitting performance you’ve seen in person? What about pitching performance? Summarized for you.

It’s not perfect- some games are marked as being in the wrong stadium (The 7/28/2007 game between Aberdeen and Oneonta was actually held at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, the 5/6/2012 game between Scranton and Pawtucket was played in Rochester), and certainly it’d be nice if it was easier to find a game that you only have scant memories of (perhaps by a “find game where player X homered and player Y struck out twice and player Z pitched”), but it’s still great. And, what’s more, they also have a basketball site up, with football and hockey versions also on the way.

So check Hardball Passport out.

Thanks (?) Internet: You, too, can now go through a dead baseball legend’s wallet

While browsing eBay for baseball-related comics and Godzilla DVDs (easily two of the 50,000 best uses for eBay), I came across something interesting being auctioned that had originally come from an estate sale for Stan Musial. It’s not unprecedented, in fact, I’ve written about it before.

However, this is, to the best of my knowledge, the first time ever that you can go through a dead Hall of Famer’s wallet. Because, well…. Stan Musial’s wallet, and it’s contents, are currently for sale.

Screen Shot 2014-05-28 at 7.20.57 PMYeah. Seriously. If you ever were a creeper enough to want to own a now-dead Hall of Famer’s family photos, insurance cards, proof of CPR training, honorary sheriff membership, devotional image of Pope John Paul II and a few hundred bucks… now you can.

And, guess what? You can even see the late, great, Stan the Man’s address, phone number and social security number.

Seriously. I’m not sure if this is funny or disgusting. Or, possibly, both.

Well…Only the internet, I guess.

MVP of Yesterday (May 27, 2014): Colin McHugh

Colin McHugh of the Astros threw 7 innings of 5-hit shutout ball, striking out 9 in the Astros 3-0 win over the Royals. He’s the MVP of Yesterday.

MVPs of the Weekend (May 23-26, 2014): Felix Hernandez, R.A. Dickey, Josh Beckett and Hyun-Jin Ryu

What a Memorial Day weekend for pitching, with Josh Beckett‘s no-hitter standing about them all. Not bad, considering we were writing obituaries on his career last year.

MVP of Yesterday (5-22-2014): Chris Sale

Chris Sale came back from the DL with authority, going 6 innings of 1-hit ball and striking out 10 in the White Sox victory over the Yankees.

MVP of Yesterday (5/21/2014): Phil Hughes

I told you. I told you Phil Hughes could be a possibly deceptive good deal, and now, after 7 shut-out innings, he’s got a 5-1 record and 3.15 ERA. MVP of Yesterday!
