Yesterday’s MR. OCTOBERS (LDS Day 2)

The Mr. Octobers of Yesterday…

In Texas/Toronto, they were Shawn Tolleson (pitcher) and Delino DeShields (position player).

In Royals/Astros, they were Salvador Perez (position player) and Ryan Madson (pitcher).

In Cubs/Cards, they were Jon Lackey (pitcher) and Stephen Piscotty (position player).

And, finally, in Mets/Dodgers, they were Jacob deGrom (pitcher) and David Wright (position player). An interesting thing to note is that while deGrom tied Tom Seaver‘s Mets single-game postseason strikeout record (set in Game 1 of the 1973 NLCS), he did it in 7.0 IP, while Seaver had 8.1 IP in that game.

NEXT TIME ON BREAKING OOTP: MARIO vs. PABLO SANCHEZ

Aside

Next time on BREAKING OOTP, the Seattle MARIOners from last time face off with the Backyard Baseball Kids in a 7-game series to determine who is the greatest video game baseball team ever.

Yes, you’ll hear about Princess Peach pitching to Pablo Sanchez. You will learn the result of Angela Delvecchio vs. Bowser. Pete Wheeler might challenge Petey Piranha’s arm!

Look out for it this coming weekend or so.

Yesterday’s Mr. Octobers (October 6, 2015)

It’s time for the Mr. Octobers of Yesterday!

What are the Mr. Octobers of Yesterday? Simple, for each postseason game (not day), there will be a Mr. October pitcher and a Mr. October position player. They will be awarded points based on the round and situation:

  • 1 for Wild Card Game
  • 3 for LDS (6 if a Game 5)
  • 5 for a LCS (10 if a Game 7)
  • 10 for a World Series (20 if a Game 7)

At the end of the postseason, the ones with the most will be the MR. OCTOBER of 2015.

So, for example, the Mr. Octobers of last night were Dallas Keuchel (pitcher) and Colby Rasmus (position player). So they each get one point to start.

Standings so far (PP= Position Player, P= Pitcher, * means eliminated from playoffs):

P Dallas Keuchel 1

PP Colby Rasmus 1

On C.C. Sabathia and Addiction

I know a man who struggled with addiction. It nearly cost him everything. To this day, he admits that facing it isn’t an easy thing to do, and neither is staying sober. It is a fight, one that may never truly end.

And that’s what makes what C.C. Sabathia did so notable and, in a way, noble.

As you probably heard already, Sabathia has checked himself into a alcohol rehabilitation center. He will miss the postseason, although that certainly isn’t what is important right now.

What is important is that Sabathia has recognized he needs help, and is apparently serious enough about facing his demons that he is doing it despite the fact that the playoffs are about to begin.

Hopefully that is a good sign, a sign that Sabathia is fully committed, and that he will win this fight. In one way, however, it could be said he already has done some good: his actions have brought this issue into the public eye, raising awareness, and perhaps inspiring others to seek help.

And that is a more important thing than any game.

Get well, C.C.
