Go here for earlier news of the day on the World Baseball Classic.
Cuba’s national team roster has been confirmed completely for the WBC now. The only way it will now change will be if there is a last-second injury:
The roster is the following:
Catchers: Frank Camilo Morejon Reyes (IND), Yosvani Peraza (PRI), and Eriel Sanchez Leon (SSP).
Infielders: Jose Dariel Abreu Correa (CFG), Jose Miguel Fernandez Diaz (MTZ), Erisbel Arruebarruena Escalante (CFG), Yulieski Gourriel Castillo and newcomers Raul Gonzalez (CA), Luis Felipe Rivera and Andy Ibañez, both from Isla de la Juventud.
Outfielders: Alfredo Despaigne Rodriguez (GRA), Frederich Cepeda Cruz (SSP), Guillermo Heredia Molina (MTZ), Alexei Bell Quintero (SCU), and Yasmani Tomas (IND).
Hurlers: Odrisamer Despaigne Orue (IND), Freddy A. Alvarez Saez (VCL), Ismel Jimenez Santiago (SSP), Vladimir Garcia Escalante (CAV), Yadier Pedroso (ART) Norberto Gonzalez Miranda (CFG), Alexander Rodriguez Matos (GTM), Yander Guevara Morales (CAV), Danny Betancourt (SCU), Leandro Martinez (Gr), Diosdani Castillo (Vcl), Raciel Iglesias and Wilber Perez, both from IJV.
Victor Mesa will be the manager of the team.
What will Barry Larkin do before managing Team Brazil in the WBC? Why, he’s going to India to teach baseball as part of a State Department program. Between doing these while also doing work for ESPN and watching his son tear it up for the University of Miami basketball team, I must wonder: does he ever sleep?
More news tomorrow….
Early WBC News for Feb. 13, 2013
As we near the World Baseball Classic, I’ll be collecting news and notes about it. Due to length, it starts after the jump.
Late WBC news for Jan. 17, 2013 and preview of tomorrow
Only one last bit of news tonight: Hainley Statia, a Brewers minor leaguer, will be playing for the Dutch.
Now, tomorrow’s schedule:
MLB Network’s Hot Stove will be the de-facto Team USA announcement special, with the announcement itself due at about 10 PM Eastern, barring something else coming up. I intend on having an initial profile of Team USA up by around noon, 1 PM.
The rest of the rosters will be revealed at 4 PM Eastern, also on MLB Network. I’ll probably hit most of those rosters quickly but go in more detail in the coming days.
So, until tomorrow, feel free to look at all of the content here at the Continuum, and also consider checking out Joe Connor’s guide.
Late World Baseball Classic news for January 12 (Part 1 of who-knows-how-many, 6:00 PM)
World Baseball Classic news that I didn’t have during my “Who’s In/Out/In-Between” and my other posts earlier today. They will be edited in to tomorrow’s edition of my listings for the WBC:
- Mike Trout won’t be playing for Team USA, opting to go into camp for what will be his first full year in the big leagues. While this is a big publicity hit for the WBC (since it will now lack both Trout and Bryce Harper, the two big rookie phenoms of last season), it probably won’t hurt Team USA that much, thanks to the heavy depth of outfield choices (Ryan Braun, Adam Jones and Shane Victorino have already confirmed, for example, and there have been past indications about Jay Bruce and/or Giancarlo Stanton).
- Oh, and speak of the devil: Giancarlo Stanton is in for Team USA! Seriously, I read that shortly after I finished typing his name above.
- Jason Bay isn’t on the Canadian roster because he has to fight for a spot in the Mariners lineup (wow, how the mighty have fallen), Jeff Francis is a similar deal. However, as I mentioned in my post about Canada’s first 23, Joey Votto is going to play so long as he passes a physical for insurance purposes. Also, there is a small flicker of hope on Ryan Dempster.
