Late WBC News for Feb. 25, 2013

If you missed the news from earlier today, go here. For the news from the day, go below the jump:

To fill Russell Martin‘s spot, Team Canada has called on John Suomi of the Phillies organization. By the way, Russell Martin isn’t the most popular guy in Canada right now, given that his reasoning for dropping out of the WBC was roughly “They said I’d have to play catcher and not shortstop.”

Some have wondered if Melky Mesa might skip the WBC now that Curtis Granderson is hurt, which could give him a better chance to win a Yankees outfield job. Well…

Meanwhile, for our Canadian readers, WBC coverage kicks off on Sportsnet on March 1st.

  1. I wonder if a better time to play this tournament is after the season. Teams could scrimmage AZ Fall league teams and Caribbean teams. You cant blame a guy for skipping out to put his career in a better position.
