If you missed the news from earlier today, go here. For the news from the day, go below the jump:
To fill Russell Martin‘s spot, Team Canada has called on John Suomi of the Phillies organization. By the way, Russell Martin isn’t the most popular guy in Canada right now, given that his reasoning for dropping out of the WBC was roughly “They said I’d have to play catcher and not shortstop.”
Some have wondered if Melky Mesa might skip the WBC now that Curtis Granderson is hurt, which could give him a better chance to win a Yankees outfield job. Well…
Melky Mesa said he still plans to play in WBC despite chance to win a big league job this spring. Said he’ll back out if NYY asks him to.

Meanwhile, for our Canadian readers, WBC coverage kicks off on Sportsnet on March 1st.
Anyway, time for a run-down of how some notable WBC participants did today in Spring Training action:
Shane Victorino (BOS/USA): 0-1, SO, 2 BB
Jose Reyes (TOR/DR): 1-3
Edwin Encarnacion (TOR/DR): 1-3, HR, RBI, SO
R.A. Dickey (TOR/USA): 2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB
Miguel Cabrera (DET/VZ): 1-3, HR, 3 RBI, SO
Yadier Molina (STL/PR): 2-2, BB
Giancarlo Stanton (MIA/USA): 1-3
Adam Jones (BAL/USA): 1-3, RBI, 2B
Joe Mauer (MIN/USA): 0-2, BB
Justin Morneau (MIN/CAN): 1-2, 2B, 3 RBI
Alex Liddi (SEA/ITA): 1-4, HR, 2 RBI
Pablo Sandoval (SF/VZ): 1-3, 2B
Andre Rienzo (CWS/BRA): 0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 ER
Joey Votto (CIN/CAN): 1-3, HR, 3 RBI
Ryan Braun (MIL/USA): 0-2, RBI, SO
Edinson Volquez (SD/DR): 2.0 IP, 4 K, BB
David Wright (NYM/USA): 1-3,
Gio Gonzalez (WSH/USA): 2 IP, 3 K, BB
I support Mesas’s decision…
I wonder if a better time to play this tournament is after the season. Teams could scrimmage AZ Fall league teams and Caribbean teams. You cant blame a guy for skipping out to put his career in a better position.
