Continuum Global News (Week leading up to April 21): News from Japan, Korea, Mexico, Europe and More

News and Standings from across the wide world of baseball (THIS IS A BIG POST SO THERE IS A JUMP AFTER THE FIRST FEW PARAGRAPHS):

Asia:

In Asia, baseball season is now in full swing, with Japan, Korea and Taiwan all in motion.

In Japan, home of Nippon Pro Baseball, the standings currently look like this (from Yakyu Baka):

Screen Shot 2013-04-21 at 11.44.28 AMAs you can see, the teams have already started to spread out a bit, forming into de-facto groups of great, good and bad. The cream of the crop in the NPB, once again, seems to be the Yomiuri Giants, who have 14 wins, 4 losses, and two ties (there are ties in NPB). Only two teams are within five games of them. The Giants, winners of 22 Japan Series and the current defending champions, have several names that would be familiar to baseball fans in North America. Shinnosuke Abe, the team’s captain, is a long-time mainstay of the Japanese national team at the WBC, and former Major Leaguers like John Bowker, Jose Lopez, D.J. Houlton and Scott Mathieson have played for the Giants this season as well. Hayato Sakamoto (another member of the 2013 WBC team) and Shuichi Murata are among the Central League’s HR leaders.

It’s a bit closer over in the Pacific League, but like in the Central League, one team has clearly gotten off to a very good start: The Seibu Lions. Based out of Torozawa, the Lions are being paced at the plate by former MLBer Esteban German, 22-year-olds Hideto Asamura and Yuji Kaneko, and outfielder Takumi Kuriyama. The pitching has also been excellent, and features 2013 WBC pitcher Hideaki Wakui and a young lefty named Yusei Kikuchi, who is 2-1 with a 1.03 ERA in 4 starts.

Also, some interesting news: NPB will open the 2014 season with games in the LA area.

MVP of Yesterday (April 17, 2013): Bryce Harper

Bryce Harper may not have had the most RBIs or the clutchest hits. But he did have 4 hits… despite flu-like symptoms that had him at one point vomiting between innings.
With this, Harper becomes the first two-time winner of the MVP of Yesterday- the standings can be seen after jump:

Quote of the Day for April 16, 2013

Today’s quote comes from Roberto Clemente:

”Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth.”

The MVP of Yesterday: The Real Heroes

Today, I’m not going to write about yesterday’s baseball MVP (although I did pick one- you can see who it was by going down). Instead, I’m going to talk about real heroes. People like these guys. Or these guys. Or former Patriots’ lineman Joe Andruzzi. Heroes. People who, whether professional emergency personnel or merely concerned citizens, whether rich or poor, run not away from horror, but straight towards it, whether it be to save family, friend, or, so often, complete strangers. They are the best of us, and yet they could be any of us. And they need not be the ones actually there helping the injured. They could just as easily be people who gave blood, or who offered shelter to runners and victims who found themselves stranded as Boston was hit by such horror and chaos.

There will no doubt be talk in the coming days of the fiends who murdered innocent people yesterday. People will play armchair psychologist and armchair terrorism expert. But, far too much, the talking heads will forget the people who fell victim to this act, and far too much, they will forget the people who did not run away… but run towards the danger.

Stay strong, Boston.

(Note: For standings purposes, I have chosen yesterday’s MVP- Joe Mauer. He went 4-5 with three RBI and was a triple away from the cycle in the Twins victory. Go below the jump for the MVP standings.)

Quote of the Day for April 15, 2013

This is a new feature where I will post a quote every day. From now on, expect three to four posts every day, sometimes five: MVP of Yesterday, Picture of the Day, Quote of the Day and a unique post or two.

Today’s quote:

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

Jackie Robinson

Blog Dealings for April 12 (and notes on the oncoming 1st Anniversary)

Okay, some brief blog dealings for today:

  • In order to have a better product and not just a list of scores, the “Continuum Global News” feature will from now on become a once-weekly feature, released on the weekends.
  • However, on the other hand, the “Picture of the Day” will return, starting tomorrow.
  • A reminder that you can donate to the Continuum tip jar by hitting the “donate” button on the front page (it’s to the right).
  • Also, if you have a high-quality baseball blog or website (I’ll be the judge of what “high-quality” means) and would like to have it linked to from the Continuum, let me know by sending me an e-mail– all I’ll ask for in return is a link to the Continuum from your site. Of course, I’ll also still add in some sites that I just plain like.
  • Also, don’t forget that the Continuum is on Facebook.
  • Finally, May 8 is the Baseball Continuum‘s 1st Anniversary. I’m planning some special things, perhaps maybe even featuring some special guests (note: If you are a semi-distinguished internet baseball personality and would like to be a “special guest”, send me an e-mail). So keep an eye out for it.

Carlos Quentin has broken The Code and will suffer the consequences

The Code. The unwritten rules by which all baseball players live by, held intuitively inside every clubhouse from Little League to the Majors. Rules like…

  • Don’t steal when you have a big lead.
  • Don’t mention a no-hitter in progress.
  • Don’t injure an opponent during a fight, especially one you started for no apparent reason.

Actually, the third one is one that many probably have always assumed, but never said. After all, in baseball fights, nobody, it seems, has gotten hurt since Juan Marichal took a bat to John Roseboro in 1965 (okay, that isn’t true, but sometimes it feels like it). Until last night.

On a 3-2 count, in a one-run game, Zack Greinke hit Carlos Quentin of the Padres. Quentin charged the mound, they collided, the usual basebrawl ensued, and when the smoke settled, Greinke had broken a collarbone and Matt Kemp, Jerry Hairston and Quentin had been ejected.

It’s unlikely that there is anyone- not even Padres fans- who will dispute that the incident was because of Carlos Quentin. While he and Greinke have a history, nobody would think that Greinke had hit him on purpose- things like that do not occur on 3-2 counts in one-run games. Quentin’s charge and the resulting fight, and the resulting injury, had no reason to occur. At all.

And, if that isn’t enough, after the game, Matt Kemp met up with Quentin in the parking lot and exchanged words.

And as that incident in the park lot proves, this isn’t the end. Merely the beginning. The next time these two teams meet- especially if Quentin is playing (it’s entirely possible he’ll be suspended during next week’s series in LA)- there will be retaliation. I know it. You know it. The social media department of the Dodgers knows it (and pulled out a Ron Burgundy reference to boot). And so does Major League Baseball, which must have the sinking feeling that next Monday’s game between the Dodgers and Padres, which was supposed to be a yearly tribute to Jackie Robinson, could get very ugly.

As Vin Scully would say: “Fertilizer.”
