Off-Topic Thursday: Starting next Thursday, Off-Topic Thursday returns with a new feature… Bizarre (Not-Baseball) Culture!

It’s been since last July that I had an Off-Topic Thursday, where I write about things that aren’t baseball. I’ve felt bad about that, so, starting next week, I’m proud to announce that Off-Topic Thursday (and it’s off-season cousin, Off-Topic Tuesday) will return, carrying with them a brand new feature here at the Continuum:

BIZARRE NOT-BASEBALL CULTURE.

Yes, all the fun of Bizarre Baseball Culture, only with… less baseball. What does “Bizarre” mean? Well, whatever I want it to mean, but in general it’ll mean something other than the usual mainstream. One week it could be a comic book, the next week an episode of a TV series, or it could be several weeks full of Godzilla movies. In other words, every Thursday that I’m able to, you’ll see something… uhh… different.

And don’t expect the usual Bizarre Baseball Culture to disappear, oh, it very much will continue to appear on it’s irregular schedule that can best be described as “when the time is right”.

But, until then, I hope you come back next week for the first installment of Bizarre Not-Baseball Culture

MVP of Yesterday for 6-3-2014 is Henderson Alvarez

The Marlins squeaked out a 1-0 win yesterday, and a big part of that was Henderson Alvarez, who threw a complete-game shutout. He’s the MVP of Yesterday.

Standings, as always, after the jump (trying to figure out how to fix the auto-links…):

LINK WEEK: Brooksbaseball.net

This is LINK WEEK. From now until Saturday, every day will have a new link. And today’s link is BrooksBaseball.net, home of the PITCH F/X tool. Using MLB’s own pitch-tracking data, Brooks Baseball takes a look at baseball in charts, graphs and computer-generated pseudo-scouting reports.

Worth a look for the true seamhead.

“Mudville Madness” by Jonathan Weeks (with some fact-checking by me) is now out

Some of you may remember when I reviewed Celler Dwellers by Jonathan Weeks.  Well, Jonathan Weeks saw it, and actually wrote me asking if I wanted to help proof-read his next book.

Well, that book is now out:

Mudville Madness is about the weird things that have happened in baseball, going in chronological order as Weeks goes through brawls, strange plays, and countless other unusual incidents in baseball history. While I cannot give my honest opinion on it, given the fact I helped fact-check it, I can say that it is available now in bookstores and online at places like Amazon.

MVPs of the Weekend (May 30th, 31st and June 1): Josh Donaldson, Hanley Ramirez and…Yu Darvish (Oh, and June 2nd: Kyle Seager)

Whoops. Forgot to post the MVPs of the Weekend yesterday, so I’ll have to roll it all up with yesterday’s MVP. So, uhhh… here goes the last four day MVPs.
May 30th: Josh Donaldson.

May 31st: Hanley Ramirez.

June 1st: Yu Darvish.

And, yesterday, Kyle Seager, who was a single away from a cycle, but, since he DID have two triples, I don’t think he’s complaining at all.

Standings, as always, after the jump:

LINK WEEK: Designated Hits

This is LINK WEEK, so until Saturday, every day will see me adding another link. Today’s link is DESIGNATED HITS. The page is based on a single question: What is a player’s walk-up (or, in the case of pitchers, entrance) song? Designated Hits lists that, team by team, while also allowing you to search to see who likes artists (say, Jay-Z) or even individual songs (“Radioactive” was quite popular last year, for example).

Parts of it could use some updating, but it’s still up-to-date enough to be included.

LINK WEEK: Big League Stew

This is LINK WEEK. Until Saturday, every day will bring a new link. And today’s link is to Yahoo! Sports’ Big League Stew blog. And, no, this has nothing to do with the fact they linked to me about the Stan Musial wallet.

Nothing at all.

I swear.

(I’m a horrible liar.)

In reality, the reason behind this is that, to be honest, I’m sort of surprised I didn’t have BLS already up. It is one of the premiere baseball blogs on the internet, giving a reader the usual news and analysis but also sometimes taking a walk on the wild side, such as when they linked to yours truly. So… check out Big League Stew.

LINK WEEK: Hardball Passport

This week is LINK WEEK, from today until next Saturday there will be a link every day to a neat website.

The first link is perhaps the best link: Hardball Passport. It’s a very simple idea: make a log of every professional baseball game you’ve been to. Every MLB game since the 1975 World Series (Carlton Fisk’s HR, to be more exact) and every MiLB game since 2002 is in there, and they are likely going to add more to the future. It’s a fun way of remembering your past travels. My page, for example, has every MLB game I’ve been to while conscious of my actions (I think I went to a Blue Jays game when I was a baby) and many MiLB games since 2000 (there is no way I’ll ever be able to remember every game I’ve been to). In addition, you can get statistics- what was the best MLB hitting performance you’ve seen in person? What about pitching performance? Summarized for you.

It’s not perfect- some games are marked as being in the wrong stadium (The 7/28/2007 game between Aberdeen and Oneonta was actually held at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, the 5/6/2012 game between Scranton and Pawtucket was played in Rochester), and certainly it’d be nice if it was easier to find a game that you only have scant memories of (perhaps by a “find game where player X homered and player Y struck out twice and player Z pitched”), but it’s still great. And, what’s more, they also have a basketball site up, with football and hockey versions also on the way.

So check Hardball Passport out.

MVP of Yesterday (May 29, 2014): Josh Collmenter

Josh Collmenter of the Diamondbacks had a 3-hit shutout last night, so I’m naming him the MVP of Yesterday.

MVP of Yesterday (May 28, 2014): Felix Hernandez

8.2 innings, only one earned run, 9 Ks, only four hits. Long live King Felix Hernandez!
