Tomorrow…

Tomorrow: A New BIZARRE BASEBALL CULTURE! Plus, a reposting of a classic Baseball Continuum post.

A quick note

Just a quick note: My usual writing computer will be in for repairs the next few days, so updates may be a bit more sporadic than I’d like. Sorry!

Coming up…

Aside

Coming up in the coming days: All-Star Game stuff, a Bizarre Baseball Culture unlike any other, the usual stuff… and, in ONE WEEK, not just a book review, but also a VIDEO GAME review!

LINK WEEK: Baseball Cube

Today is the last day of LINK WEEK, and I’m featuring The Baseball Cube. It’s somewhat like Baseball-Reference, and while it has been surpassed in many aspects by B-Ref, it still has one thing that Baseball Reference does NOT have: College Stats. While they only go back to 2002, it’s still impressive.

…and thus ends LINK WEEK. I hope you enjoyed it.

LINK WEEK: MLB TRADE RUMORS

This is LINK WEEK, and until Saturday, every day will see a new link here on the Continuum.

Today’s link is MLB Trade Rumors, which compiles MLB news and rumors all in one handy place.

LINK WEEK: Baseball Round The World

This is LINK WEEK, and until Saturday, everyday will add a new link. Today’s link is Baseball Round The World, the personal blog of former big-leaguer Mike Ekstrom, who now is playing in Italy but who has also played in Mexico, Australia, and in the Asia Series in Taiwan. The site mixes his own personal experiences with conversations with people involved in baseball overseas, as well as plenty of photos.

A nice site to check out.

Off-Topic Thursday: Starting next Thursday, Off-Topic Thursday returns with a new feature… Bizarre (Not-Baseball) Culture!

It’s been since last July that I had an Off-Topic Thursday, where I write about things that aren’t baseball. I’ve felt bad about that, so, starting next week, I’m proud to announce that Off-Topic Thursday (and it’s off-season cousin, Off-Topic Tuesday) will return, carrying with them a brand new feature here at the Continuum:

BIZARRE NOT-BASEBALL CULTURE.

Yes, all the fun of Bizarre Baseball Culture, only with… less baseball. What does “Bizarre” mean? Well, whatever I want it to mean, but in general it’ll mean something other than the usual mainstream. One week it could be a comic book, the next week an episode of a TV series, or it could be several weeks full of Godzilla movies. In other words, every Thursday that I’m able to, you’ll see something… uhh… different.

And don’t expect the usual Bizarre Baseball Culture to disappear, oh, it very much will continue to appear on it’s irregular schedule that can best be described as “when the time is right”.

But, until then, I hope you come back next week for the first installment of Bizarre Not-Baseball Culture

LINK WEEK: Brooksbaseball.net

This is LINK WEEK. From now until Saturday, every day will have a new link. And today’s link is BrooksBaseball.net, home of the PITCH F/X tool. Using MLB’s own pitch-tracking data, Brooks Baseball takes a look at baseball in charts, graphs and computer-generated pseudo-scouting reports.

Worth a look for the true seamhead.

LINK WEEK: Big League Stew

This is LINK WEEK. Until Saturday, every day will bring a new link. And today’s link is to Yahoo! Sports’ Big League Stew blog. And, no, this has nothing to do with the fact they linked to me about the Stan Musial wallet.

Nothing at all.

I swear.

(I’m a horrible liar.)

In reality, the reason behind this is that, to be honest, I’m sort of surprised I didn’t have BLS already up. It is one of the premiere baseball blogs on the internet, giving a reader the usual news and analysis but also sometimes taking a walk on the wild side, such as when they linked to yours truly. So… check out Big League Stew.

LINK WEEK: Hardball Passport

This week is LINK WEEK, from today until next Saturday there will be a link every day to a neat website.

The first link is perhaps the best link: Hardball Passport. It’s a very simple idea: make a log of every professional baseball game you’ve been to. Every MLB game since the 1975 World Series (Carlton Fisk’s HR, to be more exact) and every MiLB game since 2002 is in there, and they are likely going to add more to the future. It’s a fun way of remembering your past travels. My page, for example, has every MLB game I’ve been to while conscious of my actions (I think I went to a Blue Jays game when I was a baby) and many MiLB games since 2000 (there is no way I’ll ever be able to remember every game I’ve been to). In addition, you can get statistics- what was the best MLB hitting performance you’ve seen in person? What about pitching performance? Summarized for you.

It’s not perfect- some games are marked as being in the wrong stadium (The 7/28/2007 game between Aberdeen and Oneonta was actually held at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, the 5/6/2012 game between Scranton and Pawtucket was played in Rochester), and certainly it’d be nice if it was easier to find a game that you only have scant memories of (perhaps by a “find game where player X homered and player Y struck out twice and player Z pitched”), but it’s still great. And, what’s more, they also have a basketball site up, with football and hockey versions also on the way.

So check Hardball Passport out.
