Late World Baseball Classic news for January 14, 2013 (Part 2 of ?)

More WBC news that has come out (or that I just found) since earlier:

Buster Posey is out, but there are other members of the Champion Giants playing in the WBC. There’s the previously mentioned Ryan Vogelsong, but also Jeremy Affeldt (who joins an increasingly deep USA bullpen) and maybe Sergio Romo (who would pitch for Mexico if he accepts the invitation).
Fernando Rodney will pitch for the Dominican Republic and basically said that there was nothing anybody was going to be able to do to stop him.
Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle says that, amongst other Astros, Jose Altuve will be playing in the WBC. He’s Venezuelan.

News on the World Baseball Classic front since my post this morning:

Anthony Rizzo IS going to be playing for Italy.
According to Troy Renck, The question of Troy Tulowitzki, much like that of Joey Votto, is based on that of insurance. However, Tulowitzki is probably less likely than Votto. Also, Wilin Rosario, also of the Rockies, is also passing on the WBC, where he would have been a catcher for the Dominican Republic. Although his Twitter feed also has a post from him saying there is still a chance.
Enrique Rojas writes that the two catchers for the Dominican as of now are Carlos Santana and Miguel Olivo, but that there is a chance there will be a third emergency catcher (it’s possible that Rosario is that, and that he will play if Santana or Olivo become injured).
Evan Grant writes that Matt Harrison of the Rangers received an invite for Team USA but declined. It’s probable that had he signed up, Andy Pettitte might not have been approached, since they both are lefties.
One last Rockies/WBC note: Nolan Arenado is on the Puerto Rican preliminary roster but is unlikely to take part due to the fact he is fighting for the starting 3B spot in Colorado.

Rosters (and possibilities/non-possibilities) of the World Baseball Classic as of 12:13 PM of Jan. 14, 2013

Today’s news so far:

Tyler LaTorre, who is in the Giants system, is expected to play for Italy in the WBC.
Another player who may be playing for Italia: Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs.
Miguel Tejada will be a part of the Dominican Republic team.
According to Yakyu Baka, at least four players in the NPB or it’s minor leagues have been selected by the Chinese Taipei national team for the WBC: I-Cheng Wang, Yi-Hao Lin, Dai-Kang Yang and Yao-Hsun Yang.
Speaking of which, the Chinese Taipei team has apparently been officially released, but… the article I found didn’t actually list the roster, besides mentioning the previously-announced Hong-Chih Kuo and Chien-Ming Wang are on the roster and that Che-Hsuan Lin (who is now with the Astros and had a cup of coffee with the Red Sox) is as well. If I find the full list, I’ll let all of you know.

Late World Baseball Classic news for January 13, 2013 (Part 3 of probably 3)

Okay, last update for the night… I hope.

In his article on the latest round of players to commit to Team USA, Jon Heyman mentions that Troy Tulowitzki will be held back from Team USA do to injury concerns. I had read elsewhere that Tulowitzki wanted to play in the WBC almost specifically to show how healthy he was, but maybe the Rockies are stopping him.
Adam Wainwright won’t be pitching in the WBC… but then again, he wasn’t even invited.
Barry M. Boom’s list of players who have committed to Team USA includes Jimmy Rollins, the first confirmation in recent days that he’ll be on the roster.
And, perhaps the biggest news:

Bullpen at least Kimbrel, Gregerson, Perez. Verlander possible as a later add. Victorino on bench. US will carry three catchers. Still TBD.

Okay, so there you go: Justin Verlander will take part if he feels up to it. And there is still room for one more catcher on the roster (Posey? Wieters? Ellis?).

Okay, more news on Team USA, this time from Jon Heyman of MLB Network and CBSsports.com:

R.A. Dickey, Andy Pettitte & Ryan Vogelsong in team USA rotation for wbc. story coming on @cbssports

So, the big news from these that we didn’t already know:

R.A. Dickey and Ryan Vogelsong, who had been mentioned as possibilities, are now probable. Luke Gregerson, Padres’ middle reliever, is also in, and continues to give good depth to the US bullpen. And Heyman says that there are more “stars” to be named. Take of that as you will.

I’ll have something on the Team USA players revealed so far either late tonight or sometime tomorrow.

Okay, late news on the World Baseball Classic:

As a patriotic song once said, “The Yanks are coming, The Yanks are coming!” In this case (according to Barry M. Bloom of MLB.com), it’s Mark Teixeira (who played for the USA in the ’06 classic) and Andy Pettitte (the first starting pitcher to be firmly said to probably be in the WBC). Given the fact that usually very few Yankees play in the WBC, this could be a credit to the pull of Joe Torre.
Miguel Tejada hasn’t received a invitation to play for the Dominican Republic yet, apparently, so some of his fans are starting to campaign for him on Twitter.

WBC roster announcements according to @mlb: 10 am ET Thurs for USA, 4 pm for rest on MLB Net. MLB.com with complete coverage.

Judging by the time of 10 AM, I’m guessing that we will see the rosters revealed on the Hot Stove program of MLB Network. MLB Network will likely have a special about the rest at 4 (EDITED IN LATER: Yes, they will.). And I, of course, will be doing reviews and news on the Continuum as well.

The list is a bit different this time, set up by COUNTRY, not IN/OUT/IN-BETWEEN. This is being done because more players are joining or turning down invites by the day.

Today’s news:

Albert Pujols, who you may have heard of before, will play for the Dominican Republic unless his surgically-repaired right knee takes a bad turn.
Francisco Cervelli, who is of Italian descent and represented them last time, is not sure if he will do so this time around, as he fights for a starting job with the Yankees.
Jon Heyman confirms that Bruce Chen, who is of Chinese descent (but lives in Panama which didn’t qualify) will probably play.

Russell Wilson probably made the right decision

Russell Wilson plays for the Seattle Seahawks today, but he once played in the Colorado Rockies organization.

Looking at his career .229 BA, I’d say he probably made the right decision.
